The War in Afghanistan

The U.S. has been at war in Afghanistan for over 18 years. This is the longest war in modern U.S. history and the effects continue to because more detrimental.

An effect of this war and arguably the most concerning has been the effects on the troops. There have been over 147,000 people killed during this war and 31.9% of the deaths were accidental. This is very concerning because it raises the question of if this 18-year long war is even reaching an end or there is going to be any positive outcome.

This war has cost over two trillion dollars. For two billion dollars we could use that money to improve our country in the following ways:
  • Medicare for all policy
  • Fund an opioid center in every county in the United States.
  • Provide 280 million people with 100 percent renewable energy.
  • Fund the $200 billion annual investment needed to reduce US fossil fuel emissions vy 40 percent by
  • Pay off half the mortgages in the U.S. meaning 18 million households could start living rent-free.
  • Doubling the State Department's budget to increase the United States' ability to resolve the conflict in Afghanistan diplomatically and invest in peacebuilding and development initiatives to help build sustainable peace.
With those statistics, it is clear that the money could be used for many different positive contributions within the United States and after 18 years and close to no positive results, it leaves many wishing we spent the money in other ways.
