Social Media And Privacy

I do not think I have a very large online footprint. I do not have a personal website currently but I do know that with majoring in Strategic Communication, I will most likely get one in the future. This will mean that my online footprint will continue to grow as I continue to voluntarily put more personal information online.

I use Instagram, SnapChat, and Facebook. I do not put too much personal information on them but I do share when I am on vacation, doing something with friends, or something I am passionate about. I do not have my phone number or email publically on my social media pages so nothing is publically linked but, the platforms do have access to have information.

When looking on my social media pages, visitors would be able to learn where I go to college, which sorority I am in, who my friends are. If they dug deeper they would be able to know where I frequently vacation and information about my family.

I have a substantial amount of personal information on the internet such as my email address and phone number. This information is available on my LinkedIn which I allow to people in my "network." I think it is important to have it online for networking opportunities but I do understand the risk that goes along with having my personal information on the internet.

When signing up for almost any online site, we must give our email out to them in order to have access to the website. Although they say that this is not shared with anyone else, it still means that many companies have access to your private information.

I believe social media could make people lonely or depressed because people forget that social media is just a highlight reel. People don't post when they're upset or having a bad day. They only post when they are happy and having a great time but it makes people forget that that isn't real life.
