How Social Media Has Changed Communication

People Consume News Differently Because of the Impact of Social Media

"In a recent survey, 50 percent of Internet users surveyed said that they hear about the latest news via social media before ever hearing about it on a news station."

Social media has changed the way we can access the news because it has given us the ability to receive push notifications. This allows consumers to be informed about what is going on in the news even when they cannot be in front of a TV screen. Traditional news meant that consumers would sit down to watch the news at certain hours of the day and that is when they became informed on what had happened throughout the day. Currently, with social media on the rise, news apps allow consumers to receive real-life updates and be alert of current events while they are happening.

This benefits the younger generations who are now exposed to the news. This generation would typically not sit down to watch the news but because they can access it on sites that they are already one, they are more likely to consume it. This is a positive impact of social media.

Created a sense of urgency

Social media has caused people to want information faster. People expect that when something occurs, they will see posts about it immediately which has created an environment of needing to share everything online. Posts and stories on social media sites have to lead to more ways created for people to share more information about their lives. Before social media, people did not share every detail of their lives but now they feel a need to share details such as what they are eating, doing, and who they are with.

Users Expect Information Faster (Writing is more summarized)

Writing on social media is much more summarize than on a typical news site. Instead of having an article discussing a topic, readers now look for a simple tweet that gives them all the information they need to know in 280 characters. Twitter used to be less characters but even now, this format has led readers to expect information faster. Social media has led readers to want the information fast, without having to read far into articles. There are benefits to this format such as the convenience of finding the information fast but it could also lead to people being much less patient about articles and real news stories.

Social media has created a way to stay connected

Social Media has created an outlet for people across the world to feel connected to each other. This has helped businesses, influencers, and common people. Businesses can advertise to a wide variety of people using social media and become more well known. The term influencer was not used before social media existed but it is now used to talk about someone who is popular online. Influencers are often used as marketing tools to reach certain audiences because of the target markets they attract. People can also stay connected through social media to loved ones or friends who may not be near them.

Communication through pictures becoming more popular

Communicating through pictures has been extremely popular in the past few years. People of texting or face to face communication people have started sending and posting pictures. Snapchat streaks have become increasingly popular which is when users send pictures back and forth at least daily.
